What is Spoofing?
Secunia issued a warning for Mac users about spoofing, and PC owners have been hearing about it for years; so what is spoofing? According to IT Security.com it is, ìFaking the origin; for example, forging mail headers to make it appear that messages originated elsewhere. One spoof incident reported by CERT involved messages sent to users, supposedly from local system administrators, requesting them to change their password to the new value provided in the message. These messages were not from the administrators, but from intruders trying to steal accounts. Web spoofing. Academics at Princeton University published a paper describing how easy it is for Web spoofers to produce a 'fake' site that can sit between the user and his or her intended destination. The spoofers could receive messages and then pass them on to the true destination, and could receive replies and pass them back to the user. In this way it would be possible to 'filter' valuable information, possibly without the parties concerned ever knowing that it had occurred.î

What are Hackers and Crackers
We often characterize security attacks as ìhack attacksî. However, this is a misnomer often used by media-types when trying to explain security issues (see the article above). According to Indiana University, ìOriginally, the term "hacker" described any amateur computer programmer who discovered ways to make software run more efficiently. In a broader sense, hacker describes anyone who writes computer programs, modifies computer hardware, or tinkers with computers or electronic devices for fun. Hackers will "hack" on a problem until they find a solution, always trying to make their equipment work in new, more efficient ways.

The popular definition of hacker has changed to describe a person who maliciously breaks into computer networks with the intent to snoop, steal data, or tamper with files.

Legitimate hackers resent the association of the term hacker with criminal activity. They use the term "cracker" to describe someone who breaks into networks.î

To the Hackers: Sorry, can you please come-up with a new name. If we change the phrase to crack attack, people will believe drug addicts have invaded their computers!

What is Skimming?
We learned a new phrase today, credit card skimming. According to WTOP Radio, ìCredit card skimming occurs when someone uses a hand-held device called a skimmer, which resembles an ATM keyboard. The credit card is swiped through the device, and the device reads the magnetic strips on your credit cards. Now the thief has the information needed to make a counterfeit card.

Restaurants are the most likely spot for skimming. In fact, restaurant employees have been prosecuted for skimming. The skimmers are often used outside of your sight when a waiter or waitress takes your card when you go to pay for a meal.î

The article continues, ìIn fact, Call For Action was the victim of skimming. Call For Action's credit card was skimmed while at a local restaurant. Within a few days, Visa called to ask if Call For Action had used its card at several nightclubs in Spain to run up a tab of more than $3,000. The credit card security department knew something unusual was going on since the card is one that's used infrequently. Fortunately, the charges were dropped but the card had to be cancelled and a new one issued.î

History does repeat itself; When we checked our credit card statement online this morning, we were horrified to see over $3000 in charges of various types and all the charges are to those accommodating merchants in Spain. A call to our bank revealed that they had already detected the activity and had ëfrození the account. A call regarding the same from our credit card company would have been appreciated, but we will settle for a reversal of the charges. We also discussed the matter with the restaurant owner, the last place that our credit card had left our sight prior to this rude awaking. The credit card company representative indicated that physical removal of the information is no longer necessary and that the crooks are using ëpassword-cracking type softwareí to hammer away at the numbers until they create the correct combination. After that, itís good-bye and good shopping until they hit your credit limit.

In all honesty, it is incredible that these criminals can get away with this. How hard would it be for any countries' authorities to stop this activity? They only need follow the leads provided by credit card companies like ours; using these tips, they could deliver the stolen merchandise and arrest those that accept the merchandise. The merchants that ship goods to these unscrupulous felons should also be prosecuted. Please read the article from WTOP Radio to learn how to avoid becoming a victim of credit card skimming.

In our continuing effort to make geek speak more meaningful to you, we are offering the word of the day, packet. You here the IT guys talk about packets of information, and according to the Technomomís web site, a packet is: ìA unit of data sent across a network. When a large block of data is to be sent over a network, it is broken up into several packets, sent, and the reassembled at the other end. Packets often include checksum codes to detect transmission errors. The exact layout of an individual packet is determined by the protocol being used.î

PC Build Update
Yes, we built it, and they came to pick it up; and we were sad to see that baby go. If you missed the parts list for the computer build, visit the News Archives to find the components we used. We really loved the motherboard! And all the parts came with great instructions, so what is the hold-up with the how-to article? Building a computer, and writing about the same are two different beasts; compounding the issue is a lack of time for this job that I love, and demands from the tasks that pay the bills (AKA real work). It will be coming soon, we promise.

What Is TCP/IP?
Yesterday, we helped define what an IP address is and within the definition, there was more geek speak, the blah, blah, blah, TCP/IP, blah, blah. We introduced the later in hopes that you would return today seeking the answer for the question: what the heck is TCP/IP? According to the University of California at Davis: ìTransmission Control Protocol. Together with Internet Protocol (IP), TCP is one of the core protocols underlying the Internet. The two protocols are usually referred to as a group, by the term ëTCP/IP.í TCP enables two computers to establish a connection and exchange information. TCP guarantees delivery of data and also guarantees that information packets will be delivered in the same order in which they were sent.î Got a question about definitions you need answered? Blah, blah, blah, your IP address, blah, blah. You have heard it before, the geek speaker in your neighborhood has talked about, and we have too. So, what is an IP Address? Since these numbers are usually assigned in country-based blocks, an IP address can often be used to identify the country from which a computer is connecting to the Internet.î

There is no consensus from the experts on whether this patch will make Internet Explorer safe to surf with again, so you should continue to use an alternative browser until we hear the all clear for the Internet Gurus.

Microsoft released a press bulletin announcing the release of Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) to computer manufacturers on Friday. We would encourage you to choose the option to be prompted before installation of updates; that leaves you the options of waiting to install the update in the event that there are bugs still remaining in the patch. If you are working behind a router with updated firmware, and if you are using an updated version of AVG, and you have been checking for spyware with Spybot S&D and AdAware, and have Zone Labs free firewall activated, have all the latest MS updates, and you have stopped using Internet Explorer except when necessary (and then with the settings on high), and have XP's built-in firewall enabled, then you are safe as you can get and have taken all our advice, doesn't it feel good! So if the previous run-on sentence describes you, wait until the SP2 fix has been out for seven to fourteen days, then update.

Mozilla offers a great pop-up blocker that will prompt you to enable it the first time you receive a pop-up window. You can choose to be alerted to the presence of a pop-up by an audio alert or by a visual alert. The visual cue is indicated in the bottom right corner of the Mozilla browser by an exclamation mark highlighted by a six-pointed star like object. You may not want all sites pop-ups blocked, and Mozilla lets you accomplish this through their Tools feature. Navigate to the site that you want to receive popups from for example, financial institutions and academic sites. Then use the following path: Tools/Popup Manger/ and then select Manage Popups; choose allow popups from this site and after you restart your computer, the change will take effect.

Mozilla Updates Flaws

Mozilla.org has announced new versions of Mozilla, Firefox, and Camino in response to the recently discovered security issues. Mozilla is urging all users to update to the new browser patches to avoid compromising your computers integrity.

Security Advisories
Secunia issued a plethora of advisories today for the following systems and browsers: Debian, Mandrake, Fedora, SuSE, Gentoo, and Opera. Additionally, they issued a confirmation for Mozilla/Firefox, but the story above supersedes the advisory.

Microsoft Stalls on SP2
Is there an echo in here? In what seems to be a repetitive and routine announcement, Microsoft has again delayed issuing the long-awaited Service Pack 2 update. CRN reports that MS has found problems with the update not only in third-party software applications, but in their own software also. So update your Mozilla browser, stay current with your anti-virus programs, check for spyware weekly, and do not hold your breath until the MS finally releases SP2, you might hurt yourself.

Download RC2 of SP2
After digesting the information above, if you are an IT professional, or just someone who likes to be the first on the block, you can download Release Candidate 2 (RC2) of Windowís XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) at the Microsoft Download site. A word of advice, do not try this on your main computer or use Virtual PC just in case!

Safari Deluxe
Safari users can enhance their browsing experience by following a tip from the Tech Guy on KFI from a show on 5-23-04. Leo advised Safari users to download Safari Enhancer; the application enables the debug menu and allows for greater freedom to Safari users when making choices on appearance, imports, search engines, and more. The User Agent feature allows you to have the Safari browser appear to servers as another browser, for instance you can choose to have Safari appear as a Windows IE 6 browser; this can help you fool sites that only allow Windows users access (it doesnít always work, it depends on the sophistication of the site visited, etc.).

Here Today, Gone Tomorrow
The iPhoto update issued by Apple on Monday is no longer available according to a report in MacSlash. No explanation from Apple has been extended at this time.

Yellow Dog Linux Release
MacCentral reports that Yellow Dog Linux 4.0, first release candidate, is available from YDL.net/. This operating system is designed for ìPowerPC-based computersî, that means Macs to the rest of us. It has been tested with most Apple computers according to the report from MacCentral.

Phishers New Lure: Presidential Election
The new bait being used by Phishers to lure a new catch to their net is the election campaigns of the major parties. You should also make sure that any web site you will exchange sensitive information with has a URL address that begins with an https as opposed to http (note: no ‘s’). Hypertext Transfer Protocol is a mouthful, so we use the acronym, http and Hypertext Transfer Secure is the address you want to see to insure that you are engaging in a secure transactions.

The most talked about and least practice topic today is virus and spyware infection and prevention, subjects that rightfully receive much attention.
