At the conclusion of the program, you will receive a free copy of Microsoft's Digital Image Suite. VPN Security Fix
CNET reports that Check Point VPN has released an update for the buffer overrun issue disclosed recently. Systems in jeopardy are those with the Aggressive Mode IKE enabled and then only if they are using remote access. Learn more about the link for the patch at CNET.

What is a Buffer Overrun?
An excellent question and here is a good answer from Eddy’s home page:
“In general, a ‘buffer’ is a portion of memory reserved by the computer program in which to hold some data, usually temporarily. The problem comes when the data to be stored in that piece of memory is bigger than the piece of memory - in which case, if the program doesn't notice this, the data fills up the reserved piece of memory and over-writes whatever was written in the next portions of memory along. This is called a buffer over-run. It may damage other data being used by the program, which may lead to the program crashing; in the worst case, it over-writes the program itself, so that the surplus data gets executed in place of the programmer's instructions. This last case is the usual one for security exploits, as the attacker supplies some ‘data’ that are, in fact, instructions for the machine, in machine code”. Good Answer! Good Answer! Eddy’s site hasn’t been updated since last November, but contains some good information.

Secunia Confirms Spoofing Issue for Mozilla Browsers
Secunia issued a warning confirming that Mozilla and Firefox browsers can be spoofed by web site hackers. If this problem were to be exploited, you would basically experience a browser hijacking similar to those that have occurred to Internet Explorer users. As we advised earlier in the week, make sure you access sites for financial transactions directly from a bookmark or search engine and do not follow links from chat rooms! The Mozilla Foundation has already promised a fix although there wasn’t a patch available on Friday at 0800 PDT.

Updates for Gentoo and Mandrake
Secunia issued an update notice for Gentoo Linux 1.x and Mandrake Linux 9.x and they advise users to install these moderately critical updates ASAP.

Can You Hear Me Now?
It is working and we can hear just fine, thank you. Since we quit downloading freeware on our PCs, we have received two clean bills of health, a significant improvement over previous spyware scans. So in our humble opinion, at least part of our spyware problem was trying-out all the great looking applications available as freeware. Does that mean we will never use freeware, absolutely not! We just encourage you to either test it out on Virtual PC first, or wait for a trusted expert to do the same.

Get Security Notices from Microsoft
You can sign-up to be notified of security updates posted by Microsoft by visiting the MS support site. Microsoft will notify your e-mail account with a message that contains a digital signature to insure the bulletins authenticity. Make sure you download the PGP key at the bottom of the page.

We aren’t just computer geeks and we try to break away from the LCD screen whenever possible. When we go play, fairs and festivals are part of the plan. We couldn’t find a source for all of our favorite fairs and festivals in one spot, so we created one; Californiafairsandfestivals.com is our answer to one stop shopping for fun fairs, great festivals, cool nature events, and more in the Golden State of California. We had no idea that this state has so many fantastic fairs and events until we took on the task, and we are still compiling data on festivals, but the fairs portion is up and available for you. Each fair listing includes the date, hours, addresses, URLs, descriptions of the events, and Mapquest directions. Eventually, we hope to include pictures and related links for each and every fair and festival. Please visit Californiafairsandfestivals.com and let us know what you think about it.

No Click Frauds Here
CNET reported on the subject of “click fraud”, the process of artificially boosting web sites traffic figures and incomes by fraudulently clicking on advertisements. These schemes often employed robots or in some cases, low-cost labor to continually click on ads like the Google ads that appear on this page. This practice increased profits for these unethical web sites and it has now earned them a trip to court to answer charges of fraud. No worries here though, mate. We have made many more clicks adding the Google ads to these web pages than readers have clicked on the ads themselves. If you are interested in the products Google is advertising, they are legitimate and you do not have to worry about getting hijacked. If we ever make any money from these advertisements, it will be used to subsidize the costs associated with this website.

Build Your Own PC
The parts have arrived, shipped from Amazon.com by the big brown truck and we are getting ready to build a PC. We have featured the components to be used in this computer build in the past ten days, with the exception of the hard drive. We are going to offer in-depth explanations complete with pictures and a pre-configured shopping cart to help you build your own PC. Building a PC is easy and can save you money. The tricky part is the operating system and for that you may want to click on the link from the story above. Another possibility for an OS is using Windows 98, a stable platform for the most part and you can often find install disks at garage sales and swap meets. The hot buy from Amazon is the hard drive we are using in this build, a hefty 120 GB monster.

2. Edit the name of the favorite to “check url”
3. Edit the url address and insert this JavaScript:

javascript:alert("Actual URL address: " + location.protocol +
"//" + location.hostname + "/"

Now go to Google.com, and click on the “click url” tab/site you created; you should see a window that displays the correct url. We found that it does not work with all browsers, but it works for Internet Explorer, the browser with the bulls-eye. Free Tech Support

Security Expert Offers Advice
Security guru Steve Gibson of grc.com, was the guest on Leo Laporte’s radio show on Sunday. Steve coined the term “spyware” long ago and continues to help computer users fight off hack attacks. Steve recommends that you follow Microsoft’s advice and turn your Internet Explorer security settings to “high”. You still have to use IE for certain operations, for instance updates from Microsoft. To adjust your settings use the following path: Start/Control Panel/Internet Connections/Security. Then choose Internet (the globe icon), and then select custom level. At the bottom of the new dialogue box, choose “high” from the drop down menu and click “OK”. When you use IE, you will add a web site to your trusted sites when you need a feature to work. Yes, it is a hassle; our advice would be, only use IE when you must.

More Advice on Security
Steve also offered Leo’s listeners advice on his favorite protection methods and they include AdAware and Spybot S&D as we have recommended in the past. Spygate Personal Firewall got the nod from Steve over ZoneLab’s product due to the propensity of the latter to pester users with “upgrades”. We concur 100% on the issue of ZoneLab’s morph into a Norton-like business plan.

7-11-04  This article was originally published on 6-13-04 and is being repeated today by request and it is one of the reason for the Yellow Button above.
Lance Armstrong Continues to Triumph
In the interest of disclosure, Lance Armstrong is my hero; having stated that, let me qualify the statement with some of the reasons why I think he is greater than the sum of the parts.
The story of Lance Armstrong and his five victories in the Tour de France, the penultimate bicycle racing event, and his battle against cancer have been chronicled extensively, but Lance is not finished scripting his legacy on the roads of France nor is he finished with his battle against cancer. Lance continues his battle against the disease by helping all of us learn the facts about cancer, the treatments, and the possibilities of a life in re-mission with his foundation and website, The Lance Armstrong Foundation.
For those unfamiliar with bike racing, the Tour de France is one of the most grueling sporting events not only because of the sheer daily energy expenditure that comes from pedaling over the rugged and beautiful terrain of France, but also by the fact that the tour continues everyday for three weeks. The riders can loose seven pounds or more each day and must consume 5,000 calories to avoid severe cramps. This is not a sport for the unfit. At the age of 25, Lance had already triumphed in the Tour Du Pont and had won stages of the Tour de France when he was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 1996, and he vowed then to continue his racing career (1). In remission from cancer, Lance has won the Tour de France not once, but five times. Lance won the Tour in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2003 and judging by the condition of his primary rivals from the last tour, Lance should have a great chance to make more history as the first six-time winner of the Tour de France (yes, I am a bicycle racing fan; watch the Tour de France on OLN in July and find out why).
However, Lance continues to contribute in so many different ways in the battle against cancer. In the recent Tour de Georgia, Lance found the time to encourage a plethora of soul mates waging their own race against cancer. The stories of some of these individuals touched by this bike racer left little doubt that he has and continues to be an inspiration to the people going through the same ordeals that Lance knows well.
The story of Lance took on a new meaning for me during the past several months as we learned that my Dad has non-Hodgkinís Lymphoma and that he would have to begin chemotherapy. As a graduate student, I have learned that the web can provide instant although not always factual information. You must exercise caution in evaluating the source of the report and the advice contained within, and the first link you click on is not always the best. The surfing led us to the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) and re-connected me with my hero and his battle. The LAF provides excellent information and links for those fighting cancer. The website is easy to navigate and provides you with knowledge which can translate to power in your battle against this disease. You can also order "Livestrong" bracelets to inspire your loved ones (I am wearing it as I write) and other cool products (the hat is great) from the LAF site and the profits go towards the battle against cancer.
We have added some other website for you to learn more about the issues of cancer on the Multipleplatforms favorite links page. My Dad has completed his second chemo treatment and is tolerating the therapy fantastically, and we are anticipating a full recovery. However, we will not require him to win the Tour de France to convince us that he is truly a champion. Thank you Lance and Thank You Dad.

Window Opens On Mozilla, Windows Users Need Update!

The open source community has responded with a patch available NOW at Mozilla.org/. Please download this fix ASAP and be proactive in the war against hack attacks. It was refreshing to see a response from the Mozilla community that includes a fix as opposed to a denial. The flaw does not affect Linux or Mac computers.

New Lovegate Worm Not Lovely

The latest Lovegate variants discovered on Sunday replaces executable files with copies of itself according to CNET. Infected computers are useless after the executables for various tasks are no longer present, but the hacked computers can still spread the virus to other PCs in the network. In other words, this can be a destructive virus, and although you may not loose your data, you might feel like you are loosing your mind if you are hacked. Be proactive and switch to Mozilla.

Check URL Tool
Here is a great tip from the Windows Client Update newsletter to confirm the url for the site you are viewing:
1. Open your browser and save a web site to favorites (we saved it to the tool bar)
2. Edit the name of the favorite to ìcheck urlî
3. Edit the url address and insert this JavaScript:

javascript:alert("Actual URL address: " + location.protocol +
"//" + location.hostname + "/"

Now go to Google.com, and click on the ìclick urlî tab/site you created; you should see a window that displays the correct url. We found that it does not work with all browsers, but it works for Internet Explorer, the browser with the bulls-eye.

Chain Letter Blues
Everyone has received the dreaded email chain letter and we have always deleted them without a thought. Why do you get that letter? According to the U.S. Department of Energyís Computer Incident Advisory Committee (CIAC) the reasons include:
To see how far a letter will go.
To harass another person (include an e-mail address and ask everyone to send mail, e.g. Joe Example).
To bilk money out of people using a pyramid scheme.
To kill some other chain letter (e.g. Make Money Fast).
To damage a person's or organization's reputation.

Mac Will Not Start
Apple products are dependable, but occasionally something happens to interrupt your Mac serenity. If the end to your bliss includes an empty blue or gray screen, a flashing question mark, broken folder icon, or nothing on the screen, at all you should not despair. Check the Apple Support site for tips on how to bring back the Apple of your eye.

No More Free Downloads
We have noticed that most freeware for the PC is not exactly free, and indeed comes with a caveat, spyware. We will no longer be recommending freeware for Windows users without first trying it on our Virtual PC XP platforms. This will slow down the freeware notices and will not necessarily guarantee that the freeware will be spyware free (many spyware programs include a timer and do not manifest themselves immediately), but our conscience will be clearer. We will continue to provide freeware download information for Macs and Linux, but we will qualify if we have tried the products before recommending them.

Activate Windows XP Firewall
Make sure that you have your built-in XP firewall activated by following this path:
Start/Control Panel/Network Connections; then right-click on LAN or High-Speed Internet (assuming you have broadband), select properties, then the advanced tab, and make sure the box in the Internet Connection Firewall dialogue box is checked. This will provide you with some protection, better protection is provided if you place your computer behind a router.

More Evidence of Internet Explorer Problems

The patch Microsoft issued last Friday did not address all the avenues for hack attacks according to CNET. Researchers have posted a code to demonstrate how hackers could again back door the patch and that an earlier patch by Microsoft to repair another issue has now been nullified. Microsoft has stated this patch is just a temporary fix and they will be adding more patches soon. Switch to another browser like Firefox, Mozilla, or Opera and do not wait until you are hit by a virus and make sure you follow the directions in the Secunia article below.

Ban the iPod From Work?

Security experts at Gartner suggest that companies should consider banning iPods according to a report in MacDailyNews. The iPod could be used to steal company data or be an introduction source for Trojans and viruses. The first scenario could occur, but an iPod infected with a virus? That hasnít happened yet, but why take chances. In addition, maybe cell phones with cameras should be banned at the work place; they can be used to photograph sensitive company documents. While we are at it, cell phones should be banned also, they can be used to eavesdrop on secret company meetings. Copy machines should also be closely monitored, as they too can be used to steal company information. And...

Bagleís Back
Two new variants of Bagle appeared on Sunday according to reports in CNET. The new variants are spread through email attachments and try to enlist the infected machines in the growing army of zombie PCs. Zombieís are infected PCs that are used to distribute spam and are also used to make massive demands on targeted servers that effectively shut down internet traffic to that site.

Cruise Control Computing
Boot-up and put it on cruise control right? When it comes to operating a car or a computer, before you get to set the cruise control, you have to navigate to the open road. If you go out in the morning and the car, has a flat-tire or it is out of gas, would you get in and drive to work anyway? If the check oil light comes on, will you just keep on driving? Does Ford come to check your pick-up for the proper oil level, or do check the dipstick yourself? If you own a PC, your check engine light is on right now. Mac and Linux owners have also received a warning light. It is your responsibility to keep your computer updated. Yes, it can be a hassle, but it is nothing compared to the problems you create for yourself by not staying current with updates. That includes the operating system, anti-virus, spyware blockers, and firewalls. There are also updates for firmware and software that can reduce your frustration level, but that is a topic for another time. Most of the latest hack attacks would have been insignificant if more people had their computers updated. Keeping up-to-date is easy with Windows XP, it can be done automatically every time you boot-up. To learn more about security, check out the information available at the MSN home page.
