Phishing Is More Than Sport
According to a report from CNET, phishing scams are netting thieves $500 million annually. Phishing is the latest scam used by crackers to obtain your vital information. They accomplish this task using many methods including spoofing your bankís web site.

What is Spoofing?
This definition of spoofing is supplied by ITSecurity.com/: Faking the origin; for example, forging mail headers to make it appear that messages originated elsewhere. One spoof incident reported by CERT involved messages sent to users, supposedly from local system administrators, requesting them to change their password to the new value provided in the message. These messages were not from the administrators, but from intruders trying to steal accounts. Web spoofing: Academics at Princeton University published a paper describing how easy it is for Web spoofers to produce a 'fake' site that can sit between the user and his or her intended destination. The spoofers could receive messages and then pass them on to the true destination, and could receive replies and pass them back to the user. In this way it would be possible to 'filter' valuable information, possibly without the parties concerned ever knowing that it had occurred.

Leo Says: Get a Router and Get Protected
Leo Laporte also recommends that listeners get a router even if they only have one computer. Why? Because it provides you with NAT protection. What is NAT protection? Read about that below.

What is NAT?
What is NAT? NAT is the protection you get when you have a router and according to MSG.net NAT is an: ìacronym for Network Address Translation, a system included with many routers and some operation systems where many hosts "behind" the router, or firewall host are translated to a single real IP address. Fundamentally, NAT is great for any use where the inside client opens a connection out to a remote site (web browsing), or where the two ends rendevous on a selected, random port (IRC's CTCP, FTP), but problematic where a specific port is used and more than one of the translated machines need to accept new connections in from outside, such as in web serving, online games, and other servers.î

What is a Cookie?
No Peanut Butter or Chocolate Chips here, just the computer variety of cookies; and Media-Awareness has this explanation of a cookie, ìA cookie is a file sent to a web browser by a web server to record one's activities on a website. For instance, when you buy items from a site and place them in a so-called virtual shopping cart, that information is stored in the cookie. When the browser requests additional files, the cookie information is sent back to the server. Cookies can remember other kinds of personal information --your password, so you don't have to re-enter it each time you visit the site; your preferences, so the next time you return to a site, you can be presented with customized information. Some people regard cookies as an invasion of privacy; others think they are a harmless way to make websites more personalî.

Excellent Site for Open Source
We discovered a great site for open source users or wannabes, LinuxISO.org/. The site has links to most of the open source operating systems available. They also have links for newbies including: Introduction to Linux, ISO Image FAQ, and How to burn an ISO.

What is a LinuxISO?
What is a LinuxISO? Linuxiso.org defines it as, ìA Linux iso is a file containing a cdrom disk image of a Linux distribution. This cdrom disk image is an exact copy of a Linux distribution on a cdrom. Think of it as the equivalent of a screen capture, but instead of capturing the information on a screen, this image captures all of the information on a particular Linux distribution's cdrom. When burned as a disk image, the .iso file is turned into a duplicate cd of the original cd. If burned as a file, instead of a disk image, the cd becomes a copy of the downloaded .iso file, and not a bootable cd with accessible files and directories.î

What is a DoS?
According to MarketConscious.com DoS is, ìOn the Internet, a denial of service (DoS) attack is an incident in which a user or organization is deprived of the services of a resource they would normally expect to have. Typically, the loss of service is the inability of a particular network service, such as e-mail, to be available or the temporary loss of all network connectivity and services. In the worst cases, for example, a Web site accessed by millions of people can occasionally be forced to temporarily cease operation. A denial of service attack can also destroy programming and files in a computer system. Although usually intentional and malicious, a denial of service attack can sometimes happen accidentally. A denial of service attack is a type of security breach to a computer system that does not usually result in the theft of information or other security loss. However, these attacks can cost the target person or company a great deal of time and money.î

Have You Been Munged?
Has your system been munged? Leo said it and Wikepedia defines it as, ìMung (or munge) is computer jargon for "to make repeated changes which individually may be reversible, yet which ultimately result in an unintentional irreversible destruction of large portions of the original item." It was created in 1958 at the Tech Model Railroad Club, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1960, the backronym "Mash Until No Good" was created to describe Mung, and a while after that it was revised to "Mung Until No Good"ómaking it one of the few recursive acronyms.

Mung originally had two main meanings: to make large-scale and irrevocable changes to a file and to destroy something. A person who vandalizes a Wiki page would not be munging that page because the changes could be reversed. In the early text-adventure game Zork, also known as Dungeon, the user could mung an object and thereby destroy it, making it impossible to finish the game if the object was an important item.

The spam epidemics of the 1990s have created a new meaning for mung: to modify an e-mail address so that humans can readily reverse it but robots and address harvesters cannot.

Mung also sometimes stands for Multipurpose Unilateral Nonsense Generator, which is a program that will take web pages and run algorithms on them to make them read as if said in a dialectical manner. A web site that has MUNG filters (although it does not actually use MUNG, but Perl) can be found here(http://www.illuminated.co.uk/mung/).î

What is Scuzzy?
It is pronounced ëscuzzyí, but what is SCSI? Plextor University has this explanation, ìAn acronym for Small Computer System Interface. Pronounced "scuzzy", this interface was introduced as a method of connecting multiple peripherals to computers. Based on a parallel bus structure, with each device having a unique ID (or address), the SCSI bus will support up to seven devices plus the host adapter. Newer 'wide' interfaces, used almost exclusively for hard drives, can support up to 15 devices plus the host controller, and can transfer data at burst speeds of up to 320 MB/sec. Because of the multiple device support and extended cable length (up to 6 meters for SCSI-2), the higher transfer rate, and the ability to install multiple host adapters on the motherboard or in available connectors, the SCSI interface is used most often to connect external devices such as scanners, CD-ROMs, CD duplicators, and multi-drive storage enclosures, while at the same time connecting to SCSI devices internally, usually on the same adapter.î

Sorry, we just calling ëem like we see them.
